Can in situ measurements of mantle electrical conductivity be used to infer properties of partial melts?

چکیده
[1] Constraints on bulk conductivity from magnetotelluric measurements and petrological analyses of late Quaternary peridotite xenoliths from the southern Sierra Nevada allow evaluation of models commonly used to relate electrical conductivity to the physical and chemical state of the upper mantle. In these models, two conductive melts (basalt and sulfide) are embedded in a resistive matrix. Bounds on the amount of sulfide (0.06–0.4%) and the bulk conductivity (0.03–0.1 S/m) place constraints on the degree of interconnection between the melts. Because the sulfide melt is very conductive, even a small fraction of well-connected melt results in a bulk conductivity larger than 0.1 S/m. Similarly, completely disconnected melts result in bulk conductivities much less than 0.03 S/m. The only models which matched both the bulk conductivity and sulfide bounds consisted of a small fraction (<1%) interconnected basalt melt with a discontinuous sulfide phase. Such a texture is observed in laboratory experiments with much larger sulfide melt fractions, but has not been reported for small melt fractions. A variant of the HashinShtrikman model and a hybrid model consisting of cascaded Hashin-Shtrikman calculations were successful in matching the magnetotelluric and petrologic constraints. With a model that appropriately simulates the melt interconnectivity, we suggest that electrical conductivity may be used to infer in situ melt properties in the mantle.

Electrical conductivity of orthopyroxene: Implications for the water content of the asthenosphere
Electrical conductivity of minerals is sensitive to water content and hence can be used to infer the water content in the mantle. However, previous studies to infer the water content in the upper mantle were based on pure olivine model of the upper mantle. Influence of other minerals particularly that of orthopyroxene needs to be included to obtain a better estimate of water content in view of ...
متن کاملWater and the Electrical Conductivity of the Lunar Mantle
Introduction. The electrical conductivity of minerals increases with temperature and impurity content [e.g., 1]. Aluminum in orthopyroxene is one such impurity that has been invoked to fit the electrical conductivity of the deep interior of the Moon while maintaining subsolidus temperatures [2-4]. However, the required bulk alumina abundance in pyroxene is comparable to that inferred for the en...
متن کاملHigh-pressure radiative conductivity of dense silicate glasses with potential implications for dark magmas.
The possible presence of dense magmas at Earth's core-mantle boundary is expected to substantially affect the dynamics and thermal evolution of Earth's interior. However, the thermal transport properties of silicate melts under relevant high-pressure conditions are poorly understood. Here we report in situ high-pressure optical absorption and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements of ...
متن کاملCarbonatite melts and electrical conductivity in the asthenosphere.
Electrically conductive regions in Earth's mantle have been interpreted to reflect the presence of either silicate melt or water dissolved in olivine. On the basis of laboratory measurements, we show that molten carbonates have electrical conductivities that are three orders of magnitude higher than those of molten silicate and five orders of magnitude higher than those of hydrated olivine. Hig...

Felsic volcanic rocks embrace a portion of the volcanic succession in Kajan area of Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic assemblage. Based on trace elemental abundances and patterns, the felsic rocks might be attributed to two distinct series. In one series, normalized trace and REE patterns are rather flat (La/Yb<17) but display negative Ti, P, Sr and Eu anomalies. This series, which is called normal calc...
